Allopurinol is used in the treatment of gout and certain types of kidney stones. Also used to control uric acid levels in patients receiving chemotherapy, these patients can have increased uric acid levels due to the release of uric acid from the dying cancer cells.
Allopurinol reduces the amount of uric acid produced in the body. Increased uric acid levels can cause gout and kidney stone problems.
